Recognizing that women are the backbone of social and economic progress, the Akali Dal-led Punjab government has launched several initiatives in the state for their development. The state’s ‘Mai Bhago Istri Shakti Yojana’ is paving a long-term path to empower women.

Shiromani Akali Dal has undertaken several major initiatives for the welfare of the people. Punjab is the only state to have launched welfare schemes like Atta-Dal (subsidized wheat and pulses) and Shagun (marriage assistance) for the poor. Similarly, under the Shiromani Akali Dal government, the Punjab state provides free electricity to farmers every year at an annual cost of ₹5,000 crore.
